Sea cargo transportation to Africa from Europe
Shipments of dangerous goods to Gambia and Liberia
This case highlights a seafreight project organized by our logistics company for a B2B client.
When it comes to shipping dangerous goods by sea, many freight forwarders hesitate — strict IMDG regulations,
limited carrier acceptance, and tight cut-off schedules make these shipments challenging.
Our team recently completed two seafreight projects from Poland to West Africa, proving that with expertise
and coordination, even restricted cargo can move safely and efficiently.
Project overview
We handled two LCL shipments of dangerous goods (classified cleaning solutions) from
Gdansk, Poland to Gambia and Liberia, using different European transshipment ports:
| Destination | Route | Weight | Cargo Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banjul, Gambia | Gdansk → Antwerp → Banjul | 3 pallets / 1,489 kg | Dangerous goods – cleaning solutions |
| Monrovia, Liberia | Gdansk → Hamburg → Monrovia | 2 pallets / 1,037 kg | Dangerous goods – cleaning solutions |
Both shipments required IMDG-compliant documentation, correct labeling, and special handling procedures at each stage of transport.
Reliable dangerous goods seafreight option
Transporting dangerous goods (DG) involves a series of restrictions.
Many co-loaders and carriers declined to accept the cargo due to the chemical nature of the products.
The challenge was to:
- Secure space with a carrier authorized to handle IMDG cargo;
- Complete export customs clearance in time;
- Deliver the pallets to the port before the vessel’s closing deadline;
- Ensure all DG documentation, labels, and packaging met the latest safety standards.
For both Gambia and Liberia, there are limited weekly sailings and few LCL options, which made planning and timing even more critical.
Fast coordination and expert DG handling
Our operations team worked across three countries — Poland, Belgium, and Germany —
to identify feasible seafreight routes.
- Carrier Selection: We found ocean carriers with available space and valid DG acceptance for the specific UN numbers and classes of cleaning chemicals.
- Customs Clearance: Export clearance in Poland was arranged through our trusted customs agency, ensuring no delays at the port.
- Pre-Carriage and Port Delivery: Cargo was delivered to Antwerp and Hamburg depots exactly within the receiving window.
- Documentation & Compliance: All IMDG declarations, MSDS, and packing certificates were verified before container loading.
Thanks to efficient planning, both shipments were loaded and departed on time, meeting vessel schedules and avoiding costly rollovers.
Transit time and performance
The total door-to-port transit time for both shipments was
approximately 37 days, including:
- Pickup from the shipper’s warehouse in Gdansk;
- Export customs formalities;
- Pre-carriage to Antwerp and Hamburg;
- Ocean leg to Banjul and Monrovia;
- Coordination with destination agents for arrival notice and import clearance.
This result demonstrates our ability to meet tight deadlines even under DG restrictions.

Logistics to West Africa
The West African region — including Banjul (Gambia) and Monrovia (Liberia) —
presents unique challenges: limited container availability, smaller port capacities, and variable sailing schedules.
Our network of partners in Antwerp, Hamburg, and West African ports allows us to deliver cargo
safely and efficiently even to less frequently served destinations.
We regularly handle LCL and FCL shipments to:
- Gambia (Port of Banjul)
- Liberia (Port of Monrovia)
- Sierra Leone (Port of Freetown)
- Ghana (Port of Tema)
- Nigeria (Lagos Port)
By consolidating DG cargo at major European hubs, we can offer optimized costs and reliable sailing schedules for clients shipping to Africa.
