Airfreight of medical and rehabilitation equipment from Germany to Ghana

Delivering sensitive medical cargo safely and on schedule in Africa

Medical and healthcare equipment logistics demand more than speed — they require precision, compliance, and reliability.
Our team managed an airfreight shipment from Nürnberg, Germany, to Accra, Ghana, including medical rehabilitation devices —
Thera Trainers and Step Boards — ensuring complete safety and documentation compliance.
The total door-to-door transit time was just four days.

Project overview

The project involved transporting rehabilitation systems to a medical facility in Accra.

The cargo included:

  • 2 pallets and 2 packages, total weight 116 kg;
  • Devices for physiotherapy and mobility training;
  • Packed at the manufacturer’s site in Nürnberg, Germany, with delivery to Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Ghana.

The client requested express delivery by air, as the equipment was urgently needed for the launch of a rehabilitation center in Ghana.

Rehabilitation devices for healthcare institutions

The shipment contained Thera Trainers and Step Boards — essential tools for patient rehabilitation after surgery, trauma,
or neurological conditions. These products contain electronic and mechanical components, requiring stable transport conditions,
careful packaging, and proper handling.

To ensure integrity during international airfreight:

  • Each unit was wrapped in shock-absorbent film and fixed on treated wooden pallets;
  • Pallets were labeled as “Medical Equipment – Handle with Care”;
  • Documentation included a certificate of origin, export invoice, and air waybill (AWB);
  • Compliance with IATA packaging and labeling standards was verified before handover to the airline.

Packaging and airfreight solutions for medical equipment to Africa

Initially, the equipment was packed for ground transport within Europe, which did not meet airfreight safety and stacking standards.
Our operations team at the Frankfurt airfreight terminal repacked the shipment within hours, using:

  • Vibration-resistant insulation materials;
  • Corner guards and straps for added stability;
  • Plastic wrapping and humidity control for electronic components.

All cargo was re-measured, weighed, and accepted by the airline under IATA Cargo Handling Procedures (ICHM) without remarks.

Route planning and coordination through Frankfurt

Routing was arranged via our Frankfurt (FRA) airfreight hub — one of Europe’s most efficient gateways
for medical and healthcare shipments to Africa.

The process included:

  1. Pick-up and pre-carriage from Nürnberg to Frankfurt by dedicated vehicle;
  2. Export customs clearance handled electronically within 3 hours;
  3. Airline acceptance for the next available flight to Accra;
  4. Destination coordination through our Ghana partner for import handling and delivery to the client’s warehouse.

The shipment departed within 24 hours after pickup and arrived in Accra on the third day,
with local delivery completed on the fourth.

Customs and airfreight operations:

From pickup to delivery

Our airfreight specialists ensured smooth document flow and traceability at every step:

  • Pre-alert to the destination agent for import pre-clearance;
  • AWB and export declaration issued in accordance with EU customs rules;
  • Cargo monitoring during handling and loading;
  • Proof of delivery (POD) provided to the shipper immediately after receipt in Accra.

This precise coordination minimized waiting time and reduced risk of delay despite limited cargo capacity to West Africa.
